Is the Bible True?
- The Bible is a collection of 66 books written over a period of 1500 years by about 40 different people in many different locations. Yet it doesn’t contradict itself.
- There are many religious books, so what makes the Bible special? What makes it special is that the Bible, alone among all religious books, contains fulfilled prophecies. With the discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls in the 1940’s, books like Isaiah and Daniel among others, were proven to have been written before the events they discussed even occurred. No other religious book can claim to contain fulfilled prophecy like the Bible.
- Many believe that the Bible is corrupted, but the discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls in the 1940’s proved that argument wrong. There are more than 24,000 manuscripts and fragments of both the Old and New Testaments. These manuscripts and fragments show that the Bible we have today is nearly identical to the sources very close to the originals (see next statement).
- Some Old Testament manuscripts date to 200 years before Christ was born. Several New Testament documents date to within 30 years or less of Jesus’ death and resurrection. Homer’s Iliad is the next closest contender, with a manuscript dating to 500 years after the original.
- The Bible we have today is nearly exactly the same as the copies from 2000 years ago. The true discrepancies are minor and fill less than a page. This is remarkable considering the age and variety of the books of the Bible.
- Jesus and the apostles believed the Bible was true. In fact, the apostles would have known if it was a lie since some of them wrote portions. They would have been fools to let themselves be tortured and killed for a lie.
- For 2000 years, people have been trying to disprove the Bible. No one has yet succeeded. Is it true and inspired? You be the judge.
